Guitar Tuners
ON guitar tuners, what do the numbers and music notes mean?
The numbers specify which octave the sound you're making belongs to, while the notes indicate what note is being played. The higher the number, the higher the octave, meaning a higher pitch. Each octave has 7 different notes without flats and sharps (see below), namely C D E F G A and B, and 12 different notes including the sharps and flats. After B3 comes C4 for example, since in octave begins at a C and ends at a B.
For standard guitar tuning, you need your strings to be tuned to the following notes (strings listed from thinnest to thickest):
1 - E4
2 - B3
3 - G3
4 - D3
5 - A2
6 - E2
Unless you're seeking a non standard tuning, you should be careful not to tune a string to any flats or sharps. A flat note is written followed by a 'b', such as Eb. Eb comes before E, so you need to tighten the string more to reach E. A sharp note is written followed by a '#', such E#. E# comes after E, so you need to loosen up the string to get to E.
